APPAC Meets with US Senator Cory Booker, Who Congratulates APPAC on Historic Federal Judge Confirmation

What an amazing day to celebrate with Senator Cory Booker. Senator Booker, a trailblazer pushed for, and saw through, the nomination of Judge Zahid Quraishi, the first Pakistani and Muslim American Judge to become the first ever Article 3 Federal Judge in the country. Senator Booker saw the vision of APPAC and committed to our communities across the United States to be a leader that brings the true essence of our great nation; “united together”. While his inspirational words motivate our community to continue to show up and participate in our country’s government, his actions give us more of a reason to do it with dedication. APPAC Statement on the 20th Anniversary of September 11, 2001

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City. APPAC joins the global community in remembering the lives there were tragically lost that day, and the subsequent lives lost as a result of terrorism. APPAC remembers and honors the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to rescue and protect others. After 9/11, the lives of our brothers and sisters changed forever. Muslim-Americans and the Pakistani and South Asian community in America experienced discrimination and surveillance. Muslim-Americans lost loved ones during the 9/11 attacks and continue to endure hate crimes that run rampant today. APPAC joins Muslim-Americans and Pakistani-Americans to denounce hate and violence against all of our citizens. Muslim and Pakistani-Americans have made incredible contributions in America, before and after the attacks, and will continue to work towards the betterment of this country. APPAC is committed to helping support the great work that many Pakistani and Muslim Americans are continuing to do for the advancement of American, our political leaders who represent us, and all of its people. Today and everyday, we will remember those lost on 9/11 and honor their memory.

APPAC Supports New Leaders Rana Abdelhamid, Muad Hrezi, and Imani Oakley for Congress

This August, APPAC hosted a fundraiser to support new leaders running for U.S. Congress. Each of these candidates possesses the skills and leadership needed to bring positive representation and change to our federal government. We are excited to support new leadership into Congress and remain committed to developing the next generation of political leaders. Thank you to Mirza Khawar Baig for hosting a fundraiser in support of these Congressional campaigns. Rana Abdelhamid, Democrat Running for Congress in New York’s 12th Congressional District: “My opponent has been in Congress for nearly thirty years. And over those thirty years, we’ve seen the cost of housing, child care, health care, and education skyrocket. When nearly half of Congress is made up of millionaires taking donations from other millionaires, we know there’s a problem. It’s time for true representation that reflects all of us at the bottom, not just those at the top. It’s time for a new generation of leaders to make a difference.” Muad Hrezi, Democrat Running for Congress in Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District: “I am running because we need more leaders who are not just going to say the right things, but are actually going to fight for them. The time for rhetoric is over. The people are demanding that our government start actually working for us. And that’s what I plan to do.” Imani Oakley, Democrat Running for Congress in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District: “Our communities deserve a fierce advocate for the progressive policies that will help our communities to thrive. If elected as your Congresswoman, I pledge to fight for economic justice, racial justice, a Green New Deal, Medicare for All, workers’ rights, innovative infrastructure, demilitarization both nationwide and abroad, and of course, a fair democracy for every one of us.”

APPAC Remembers August 5th, 2019

On this day two years ago, the Indian government overturned Article 370 of its Constitution, a rogue act that stripped the State of Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and of its statehood, including its right to have its own constitution and its own flag. Along with it, the dissolution of Article 35A, has made the valley vulnerable, and the recurring nightmare many Kashmiris have had for years was coming to a reality. The continued military occupation of Kashmir is one of the worst human rights violations in history. APPAC will continue to stand in solidarity with Kashmir, and calls for the restoration of statehood in Kashmir, and the protection of land and human rights for all its people.

Today, we remember that the Indian Government confined about seven million Kashmiris, barricaded them to their homes and imposed a complete communications blackout from the rest of the world. Today, we remember the actions the Indian government took to ensure deathly silence against the Kashmiri people.

The people of Kashmir continue to be without their basic needs met, while the economy lies in ruins. The intentional and unconscionable suppression of civil and democratic rights is a daily reality for Kashmiris. The actions of the Indian Government and military continue to endanger civilian security and political freedom, even today.

APPAC calls for:

  1. The reinstatement of Article 370 and Article 35A, restoring autonomy to Kashmir, its land and its people;
  2. The end to the extreme human rights violations, disappearances of Kashmiris, and the extrajudicial killings and cases of torture;
  3. The end of rape by BSF as an instrument of oppression.

The disturbing trend of violence and human rights violations in Kashmir needs to come to an end. India’s move to unilaterally remove Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy, and strip the law that safeguarded the native population’s rights and their land was the final assault against Kashmiris, and the world must take note.
