APPAC Inaugural Gala

Event Description Celebrating a Year of Advocacy, Hope, and Activism: APPAC Hosts its inaugural Gala As 2018 comes to a close, the American Pakistan Public Affairs Committee hosted its first gala on Saturday December 1st, to celebrate its hard work, vision, and desire to continue fighting for the community. The event, which was attended by over 350 people including elected officials, business leaders, activists, and scholars, was a resounding success. Most importantly, the event was comprised of a majority of Pakistani-Americans who have never before attended a political event of any kind. These attendees were informed of the work APPAC has done, the work APPAC is going to do, and unified vision APPAC is promoting for the future. APPAC has always believed that Pakistani-Americans must “get off the sidelines” and become involved in civic and political life. This 1st annual gala proves that bright things are headed in APPAC’s future.

APPAC Young Leaders Empowerment Conference

The event hosted forums that featured academic leaders, like Hofstra University Dean Lawerence Levy, to newly elected New York Assembly member Catalina Cruz, and many other well regarded elected officials, activists, scholars, and community leaders. Organizing among the Pakistani-American youth is never an easy task, however, APPAC proved that when engaged our youth more than willing to step up to the task. Forums on “political organizing, fighting racism, embracing diversity, and the importance of philanthropy” were well attended by over 350 Pakistani-American youth. Most importantly, all in attendance left the conference with a set of civic and political goals that will help Pakistani-Americans pursue a unified and focused agenda. If before people thought our communities youth were stagnant, after this weekend that perception will change. The youth in attendance learned strategize, shared ideas, and were given leadership to go out into the world and start to immediately work for change.

APPAC Launches Monitoring, Documenting and Reporting Program

Would you like to be able to report bias, hate and discrimination incidents with the help of an application on your phone? Now that’s easy. In late June 2017 the Council on American-Islamic Relations launched a new civil rights app this week called “Making Democracy Work for Everyone.” It allows users to quickly report bias incidents they experience, “an important feature during a period of increased hate incidents targeting American Muslims and other minority groups,” says a CAIR press release. The app’s launch comes a few weeks after Nabra Hassanen – a Muslim teen was attacked and killed near a Virginia Mosque. There has been an unprecedented spike in hate crimes targeting Muslims and other minority groups since the election of President Trump. In response to increased number of hate attacks around the country the American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee has also launched its Monitoring, Documenting and Reporting Program in late June 2017. Now you can also report incidents of bias, hate and discrimination by reaching out to us at our e-mail info@appac.co or calling 1-877-62 APPAC: If you are interested in volunteering to assist us with program tasks, please contact us. Thank you!

Fundraising in support of Councilwoman Debi Rose for New York City Council

Event Description American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee hosted a fundraising event in support of Councilwoman Debi Rose for New-York City Council on August 10th, 2017 in Staten Island to help its constituent target groups’ voices heard and partnering with local politicians and stakeholders. The event was a success with the aimed target funds raised for the candidate. During the event the APPAC platform and goals were also introduced to Staten Island Community leaders and numerous attendees of the event were accepted into the APPAC membership. APPAC would like to thank all who attended the event and showed their support! Debi Rose is a second-generation Staten Island native and the first African American from Staten Island elected to the New York City Council. She has made economic development, education, public health and public safety among her priorities since she won the race for the 49th Council District seat in 2009. Subsequent to her re-election in November 2013, Councilwoman Rose was appointed Deputy Majority Leader for the City Council and Chair of its Waterfronts Committee. In addition, she sits on the Aging, Education, Land Use, Rules, Privileges, & Elections, and Transportation committees, as well as the council’s Budget Negotiating Team. APPAC sincerely believes that civic engagement, responding to local politics with active participation and contribution of ideas, action and support are vital to the longevity of our nation. It is our common responsibility to improve our understanding of the local infrastructures that make our democracy work. French political scientist and historian Alexis de Tocqueville believed America’s highly unique government worked because its citizens were active in the political sphere. They voted and attended town meetings, involved themselves in private associations, and went to church. But all these things have faded in popularity as our news and politics have become more centralized. Many of us don’t take the time to talk to our neighbors, let alone go to a town hall meeting. And when no one shows concern for the local sphere, it’s easy to feel unimportant and helpless, which results either in apathy or bitter anger — both of which we’re seeing in this election cycle. You can start increasing your civic engagement and contribute your voice, actions and support to the causes that you care most by supporting Councilwoman Debi Rose and becoming a member of the APPAC. With more inquiries please send us an email at info@appac.co or call us at 1-877-62 APPAC.

Event Description Dear APPAC Community and friends who support our cause, APPAC – American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee cordially invites to join Fundraising event for Angela Ramos, candidate for Suffolk County Legislature. Angela Ramos was on the front line of the successful fight to bring a Prayer room and Halal food to the Muslim students in the Brentwoos school district. She lobbied the NYS Senate and Assembly in an effort that resulted in the acquisition of $250,000 for the MDQ Islamic school in Brentwood. She’s spent years fighting for women’s rights as President of the Long Island Women of Vision Coalition and for education reform in Brentwood by advocating for teachers and students. She transported several buses of Women including some from the Bay Shore MDQ Mosque to protest Trumps racist policies in Washington DC. Angela has secured thousands of dollars to fund anti-graffiti programs, health fairs, and other projects in Brentwood and Central Islip. She will fight for our working families in a real and effective way by holding the line on taxes, addressing gang and community safety issues, and ensuring our resources are used to enhance the quality of life in our community. Angela Ramos balances the roles of mother, wife, and community activist with dedication and strength. Please vote for Angela Ramos for Suffolk Counties 9th District Legislator for a representative for all who is not afraid to speak truth to power and will fight for real resources with real results Thank you!

Eid Celebration Honoring Dr. Asif Mahmood for Lt. Governor of CA

Event Description The American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee is hosting Eid Celebration and Honoring of Dr. Asif Mahmood, running for Lt. Governor of California, the first American Pakistani, determined to do so. Mr. Mahmood is a Los Angeles based physician, a Democrat and supporter of a “Medicare for all” national healthcare plan. He was raised in a small rural town in Pakistan before coming to the U.S. In his political campaign he is prioritizing fight against hate crimes, racial, religious and ethnic divide, poverty and poor health care in the U.S. To learn more about Mr. Mahmood’s political campaign please visit his campaign page at https://asif2018.com/ APPAC, among its goals, is also committed to support and promote higher political participation among diverse ethnic groups which makes up the population of this wonderful country. Many independent studies indicate that Asian Americans have a high level of political incorporation in terms of their actual voting population in the U.S. However, as a result of this group’s historically low voting rates, overall political incorporation of the general population is relatively low. Although the population of this group has increased in size by 600% in 30 years due to immigration, heavy naturalization and voter outreach efforts have provided this primarily foreign-born community with less than 1% of voters. The low political incorporation of Asian Americans has posed a concern especially when taking into account the fact that they are the fastest growing population in the U.S. Among them, according to a 2015 research by Migration Policy Institute, it was estimated that there were 453,000 U.S. residents of Pakistani descent living in the U.S. The actual numbers of the American Pakistanis should be much higher than that figure. Pakistani-Americans have become the second fastest growing and the seventh largest group in the United States, research statistics have revealed in 2012. Since its formation, APPAC is actively contributing to increased political participation of the American Pakistanis in the U.S. political life and processes. We are hosting the June 27th event with the same goal of attracting more supporters to Mr. Asif Mahmood’s political campaign – the first ever American Pakistani running for the position of Lt. Governor in one of the most important states of the country being California. Please come and demonstrate your support!
